Our local supermarket is not rationing at checkout. No, “limit 2 per family”.

Instead the are only putting a certain amount per day on the shelves per day. They restock the shelves multiple times per day.

So where they use to have 100 cans on the shelves and they would restock every hour. They might sell 200 cans on a day.

Now they put out 10 every couple of hours. Only 50-80 per day.

Bacon shortage???? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I was surprised when I saw this because we did our weekly Publix run a couple of days ago and nothing seemed to be limited.

I was impressed they had a freezer case almost overflowing with their brand turkeys at 49 cents/lb, and Butterballs at twice that. No signs saying there’s a limit. Seriously, I thought the top layer in the freezer might be in danger of thawing. I was also thinking turkeys would be far more than those prices based on news we read about shortages.

Then I went and read the list of what was being limited and only one thing on the list is in our regular shopping rotation.

Costco in the DFW area limiting toilet paper and kitchen towels to “1 per customer”

Right now, no store imposed limits (that I’ve personally seen) to report in STL MO suburban market area. Hearing others say things like TP/paper product and bottled water are being limited at some stores.

I do nearly all my grocery shopping at one store, generally regarded as an semi-upscale local chain grocer, and while they are more costly on some products, the store is well run and well stocked. I cannot say the same for some of their competitors based on past experience. That’s precisely why I shop where I do now. That, and it is closest to home base, so quite convenient.

In any case, there are noticeable “holes” on the shelves all over, and some problem items I’ve noted as they are things I buy (enough to notice) and have been periodically unavailable over the last several months. A certain brand of prepacked pizza crusts and bulk bagged pepperoni that I use sometimes have been slim of late as just one example. For now the items in short supply are completely random, and not neccessarily brand name big sellers that one would expect to be sold through quickly.

Paper product at this particular store has nornalized since the great TP blow out of last year, and they did have limits in place until vendors were able to get stock levels back up. I have noted it looking picked over on my most recent two trips, however. Have heard multiple first hand reports of the local Target/Costco/Sam’s being blown out of TP, paper towels, kleenex and bottled water. I fully expect this will become more frequent into winter as lthe panic ramps back up.

The big story presently is inflation and the massive shrinking of packaging taking place. A local Tex-Mex restaurant has taken to selling their queso dip and other house branded items like chips and guac at the grocer I go to. I buy their queso once in a long while because it’s damn good. It had been a 12oz container for $5.99 (already steep for the quantity) and on the most recent trip I noted the packages are now 10oz at the same price. I’m seeing that all over the store, along with substantive price increases. Meat prices are way up, bacon most especially.

I haven’t seen the limits on things at my local Publix here in S. FL, but OTOH, my old hypertensive fat ass isn’t allowed to eat processed food anymore, and I get my bacon and meat from a butcher.
I buy paper towels and shit tickets in bulk from Amazon these days, too, so I can’t comment on that either.

So? They’ve done this every time the eneMedia stirs up stories of shortages and evil shortages.

A lot of the stuff that is limited in purchase also comes from China, so well, want no shortages, don’t buy from China.

The only thing I noticed on Thursday that was limited was cranberry sauce. And there is a nationwide shortage of that holiday staple. I did notice idiots filling up carts full of packs of individual juice bottles. Not the full half-gallons, just the individual bottles.

And in these days of supposed turkey shortages and expensive turkeys, Publix is still selling their store-brand turkeys at $.49/lb, and turkey breasts at $1.49/lb, and are asking people to not buy more than 2 at a time (but aren’t restricting people from buying more.)

Oh, excuse me, Publix has also done this during emergencies in local areas.
