‘cuz I’m working for a living. (Hat tip to Huey Lewis…)

I didn’t post yesterday, because my phone rang at 0500 with my boss on the other end of the line. They offered me a cash bonus to get out of bed and come immediately to work. A cash bonus plus time and a half was enough to get me out of bed, so no blog post yesterday.

Do tell! when you have time.
That isn’t normal for them to offer the $$, is it? Was it really just a matter of several key folks getting sick or whatever at the same time, or perhaps some other new-to-us crumbling of society leading to them having to do that to get you or someone anyone in?
(e.g. maybe Southwest Airlines was making similar frantic calls when every pilot in Orlando suddenly got sick)

It has been happening for at least a year, and its been nationwide. Hospitals have decided that they don’t want to raise wages, because they believe the giving raises to solve a staffing shortage is a long term solution to a short term problem.
So they hire temporary contract “travel staff,” and offer a large shift bonus to staff.
Right now bonus amounts are $150 for clinical staff, $250 for lab staff, and $750 for nurses. So a nurse working an extra shift receives nearly $1500 for a 12 hour overtime shift.
Travel nurses are signing 13 week contracts. They work four 12 hour shifts per week, and are paid $4500 for the week. At the end of the 13 weeks, if they complete the contract they get a $10,000 bonus. So the total a travel nurse gets is $68,500 for a 13 week contract. The downside is that there are no benefits for this contract. I know nurses who work two of those 13 week contracts a year, and take the rest of the year off.
My son is a Nurse Practitioner. When he went to NYC in the summer of 2020, he was paid $14,000 a week for his 13 week contract. So doing the math, he got $182,000 for his 13 week contract.
