If you can, do walkthroughs as things progress. I was able to walk through my new-construction house from the time the frame went up, which was good for two reasons. First, I was able to photograph where all the electrical, plumbing and telephone lines were in the walls. Second, I saw a couple of things that needed to be addressed (e.g. ceiling fan box in the wrong place) that were much easier to fix before the drywall went up.

Me and my Wife built our own, took 5 years. I am a welder.
