A proposal to ban police officers from pulling over drivers for minor traffic violations, known as “secondary stops,”

Wait, so the cops in Connecticut won’t be able to use stops for your license plate light being out as an excuse to search you and your entire car? Republicans are opposed to it, of course. They can’t wait to lick the boot.

I was with the article until I got to this:

Data on traffic stops in 2023 also showed that Black and Hispanic drivers were more likely to be stopped for an “administrative offense” or a license plate display issue, were stopped for longer periods of time, and more likely to have their vehicles searched when compared to White drivers.

That’s because most of the police are sent to black neighborhoods, due to those neighborhoods being where most of the crime is located. They should have stuck to showing how these stops don’t really do anything to prevent crime and left the race card out of it.

“ That’s because most of the police are sent to black neighborhoods, due to those neighborhoods being where most of the crime is located. They should have stuck to showing how these stops don’t really do anything to prevent crime and left the race card out of it.”

It’s the old correlation does not equal causation effect. Yes, more crime occurs in black neighborhoods, and yes blacks commit (a lot) more crime. With respect to traffic stops for procedural issues, these black and Hispanic neighborhoods are likely poorer than the white neighborhoods. Being poorer, their cars are likely going to be older and get less repair and maintenance leading to these types of violations.

However, Pavlov the communist can’t help himself when it comes to cultural Marxism and the only explanation for blacks having a disparity in outcome must be caused by discrimination and systemic racism.

My daughter was recently stopped for a broken tail light. I explained to her that cops love that kind of stop because the folks that don’t get their head/tail lights or cracked windshields fixed also tend to also be the folks with no insurance and/or outstanding warrants.

I’d be curious what the current refs are in Connecticut.
What defines a secondary violation and whether someone can be pulled over for it depends alot on the state.
For example, in Ohio seat belt use is a secondary offense that a cop can’t pull you over for but he can ticket you for it if he pulls you over for something else, like speeding.
In contrast, in Pennsylvania cops can pull you over for not wearing a seatbelt because there it’s a primary offense.
In Ohio all cops can use radar, but in PA only the state troopers are supposed to use it.

I used to live in San Diego, went to the desert for friends and off road fun. Border Patrol has a permanent station/road block ON westbound interstate 8 on the east side of the mountains, in the desert. In addition to EVERY kind of sensor that you can imagine approaching the inspection area, you also have to pass getting eye balled. Border Patrol (even pre 2015) was very diverse. No matter what color the poor schmuck stuck with Wave duty, one half glance at me and instant wave through. No matter what color trooper, they would wave LOTS of brown people into Secondary. Profiling is real and it works. Anyway, all that to say this, ONE time (being humorous) there’s this large, bored black Mr. Universe, his uniform is SS perfect. I pull up in my empty, naked mini truck and say “The illegals are in the back.” Funny, right? With no change in facial expression, he waves and says “Secondary”. So I pull over to secondary, get out, stretch and start shooting the shit with the guy that looks like a 40 year younger version of me (we’re both, even wearing boonie hats). Pretty quickly he asks why I’m here, I point back at black Adonis and say “He sent me here.” He gives (friendly, humorous) me and my pick up another glance each and says “Take off, have a nice day.” So, my race card works. Law enforcement actually uses experience and discernment in their judgement, that’s why profiling works. I appreciate getting profiled, it keeps us ALL safer. YMMV
