This blog has been having issues with problem comments. More than 200 of them in the past 5 days.

There are the spammers. The most frequent one lately is a series of comments that begin with “Google paid me XX dollars an hour…”

Then there is an obsessed IT nerd who has been engaging in 2,000 word comments that are both insulting and inflammatory. Here are some excerpts from some of his recent comments:

this is you: “this is all terribly important and you should be doing it way better, YOU’RE HERE TO SUPPORT MY MISSION”, i.e. demonstrating that God-tier entitlement complex I talked about in pluperfect form

Or perhaps:

I hope you don’t approach your patient care with that kind of lackadaisical attitude (lol, who am I kidding)

Or even:

Things somehow never managed the trick of reading simple English; instead they post on blogs about what awesome lifesavers they are, despite the fact that their plumber has saved more lives in a week than any one of them has done in an entire career.

I support the free exchange of ideas and opinions. One of the few rules that I have here is that no personal attacks are permitted. Another thing that I want everyone to understand is that I am the one who pays the bills here, this blog is my property, and I decide what goes down on here.

I try very hard to keep moderation of comments to the very minimum needed to keep things orderly and civil, but at the end of the day, it is still my call to make.

If this sort of thing keeps up, we may have to move to a registration system for commenting. I don’t want to do that, but the amount of spam I get is getting out of hand.

Trolls and spammers suck. It also sucks you have to waste time tamping them down. While on the subject of moderation, if any of my comments are over the line, please say so and I’ll back off. I get fired up a lot (yes, I’m possessed of actual self awareness) and sometimes go a little heavy as a result. Ultimately it’s your house, your rules, and I respect that.

thanks for quoting me; I do like the fact that you clipped some of the best pieces of the comments you deleted and nailed them to your front page, you definitely owned me there

(curiously, describing a random commenter as an “obsessed IT nerd” is neither insulting not inflammatory)

because the 18 comments I have had to delete of yours in the past 6 hours, all supporting your IT career and denigrating me, don’t mark you as obsessed, IT, or nerdy.

discussion so far:

you: “I hate IT nerds”
me: “those ‘IT nerds’ operate under a lot of constraints you don’t understand and would perform equally badly under”

you: “he didn’t explain things to my satisfaction, he’s a jerk, this is crap, where is my pony”
me: “let me explain this with an illustrative short story about what this looks like from their perspective”

you: “you wrote a book, if you want to write a book get your own blog”
me: “lmao, okay, continue seething and getting junk-punched by the IT guys whenever they get the chance – which is going to be ever-more-frequently, because that’s what you get from doing what you are doing right now”

you: “I will delete everything and shut down comments because TROLLS”
me: *laughs in Consultant*

What a penis you are. You’re like the guy who bought the Super Blaster 9000 in 9mm, and DiveMedic posts a review saying that he doesn’t like the SB9000 in .45, so you come on here whining about what an asshole he is.

Why TF do you even care? Who is this guy to you? He is right in labeling an IT nerd troll; no one but same would expend so much time and energy on some rando blogger. Find a hobby.

Clearly, there are a lot of people in this world in need of healthier hobbies.

I’ll line up with Big Ruckus – if you thnk I’m out of line, tell me in the comments. I’ve written several comments, re-read them before posting and decided “no, that’s harsh” or “out of line”, deleted the comment and either re-written it or just not commented.

I despise the idea of commenter regtistration, and do not comment on some blogs because of it, but if Leftist trolls force it, that’s what it has to be.

I suspect what’s happening is a concerted effort by the Left to restrict the free exchange of ideas on blogs because they can’t control them like they control the MSM.

Going to comment registtration will reduce the number of comments, but until the revolution is over – and mark my words, there will be one – it may be what we have to do.

When people are out of line, I let them know. Unless it is obvious spam (You can make XXX in a few hours a week, or Buy Viagra here).

Most of the time, that is all it takes. There are people that I have had heated disagreements with here. I’m OK with that. Disagreement and debate are healthy. What I don’t want to see is personal attacks or deliberately antagonizing people.
