Back in November, NPR did this interview where they identified three gun subcultures
Recreational- hunting and target shooting, with this group focusing on hunting rifles and shotguns
Defense- self defense. This group supposedly focuses on handguns
Second Amendement. They claim that this group has come about over the last ten years, and focuses on a belief system and primarily “assault style weapons.”
The key admission here is this:
But we do know that about 1-in-20 Americans now own an assault-style rifle. And about 1-in-5 gun owners own an assault-style rifle. We know that manufacturing of this style of rifle has increased dramatically since the end of the assault weapons ban, the federal ban that ended in 2004.
So right around then, assault-style rifles accounted for about 2% of all guns manufactured in the U.S. And in 2020, that same style of gun accounted for about 25% of guns manufactured in the U.S.
Sounds like “in common use” to me. But I think those numbers illustrate just how many gun owners there are. Do the math- If 5% of Americans and 20% of gun owners own an “Assault style rifle” that means 25% of Americans own a firearm. They are trying to say that 90 million people own 600 million firearms and billions of rounds of ammunition.
If even 1% of them decide that they are going to resist the government with arms, the cops and military are outmanned and likely outgunned. Remember that at the height of Afghanistan, there were about 20,000 insurgents, and those 20,000 goatherders kicked the US military’s ass. Now imagine that there are 900,000 insurgents, some of whom are in the military, and all of them sitting near the military’s logistical base and families.
That must keep the tyrants awake at night.

And in their insanity, they think that there is no overlap, and that they can wedge issue gun owners into fighting themselves.
Never mind that hunters can reliably hit an 8″ target at 200 yards, and target shooters at 3 times that range, and that their wish list disarms everyone.
If all of us are their enemies, eventually, some of us may decide that some of them are our enemies. I hope that doesn’t happen, but every day, they try to make it more likely.

In that great mass of amateur and ignorant OPFORs, it’s hard to plan for people that have no idea what they’re doing and make it up on the run. I don’t expect the Lord to intervene, but I’ll bet Murphy Phucks with the evil Phuckers extensively, along with plenty of inside saboteurs.
Just read your “Lessons from History” article.

Oh yeah this started in the last ten years. What morons. Lets just ignore the massive number of M-1 Carbines that sold during the 50’s and 60’s, or the number of Mini-14’s that sold in the 70’s and 80’s. Until the expiration of the AWB AR’s were EXPENSIVE, M-1 Carbines and Mini-14’s were not. That is what sold. Now the only thing left that is inexpensive is a budget AR.

That was going to be my comment! I bought a mini-14 back in the 80’s (it was a POS that couldn’t group due to the pencil thin barrel). But boy it looked cool, all kitted out with scope, lights, etc. The AWB in the 90’s really ramped things up, with lots of people thinking “I gotta get one now” just because of the AWB. I bought a M1a myself, trying to be different. That so-called 3rd group has been around a long time. Yes it has blossomed here lately, but the 90’s was the real starting point for fast growth.

A nice thing about the situation is that nobody knows exactly how many people have guns or exactly how many guns there are. Personally, I lean toward the upper range of numbers I’ve seen, more like 900 million. Uncertainty is guaranteed by there being no tracking of some of those things at all until what’s really quite recently.
As you say, “that must keep the tyrants awake at night.”

In 2004 AR style rifles were 2% of what was manufactured. Now they’re about 25%. Nothing like telling people, “you can’t have that” to make them want it. The fact that they scare the shit out of libtards who think thry were designed to kill a bunch of people, really fast, with the shoulder thingy that goes up, is just icing on the proverbial cake. Now the things are in common use and can not be “categorically banned”, though the communist tyrants still try and when they refuse to comply with the laws, they should be hauled out of their offices and courts and put before the tribunal.

The only variable in this “resistance” is whether the military will be operating under the same rules of engagement domestically that hamstrung it in Afghanistan.

Things will be uglier than you can imagine. They can’t bomb entire neighborhoods without pushing thousands over to the other side. In American wars of the past, at least in anyone’s living memory, the US military has fought its battles overseas. Their supply base was largely safe, as were military families. Not so in a CW situation.
Every troop that has to guard family housing, every mile of electrical grid being patrolled, every factory that has a sentry is a force multiplier because that is fewer troops to prosecute the war.

Eh, the goat-herders didn’t beat us, the bureaucrats did. We KNEW who a large amount of the leadership was, but they wouldn’t let us hit them unless a laundry list of requirements were met. And as soon as they were near a population center or got within a few miles of the border we’d have to back off. Anyone who thinks they’re going to give us the same courtesy is delusional. A second civil war will be nothing like Iraq or Afghanistan. It’s going to be the Balkans if we’re lucky, or Rwanda if not

As someone who has participated in many military/fed wargaming/planinng exercises. I can tell you that outside of TOP officials there is no thought on anyone going after lower level govt/mil families and the protection needed. I have seen really good tactical folks look at a official and tell them flat out. If I was a real resistance fighter and you went after my family to get me, yours will be next and still they don’t get it. Due to the fact there has been no wars on our continent for over 200 years, they don’t get it just like the normie americans….
Icy Reaper · April 25, 2024 at 4:13 pm
Maybe its just me but if your group is into self defense then you will look at more than just a handgun to defend yourself and your family. Rifle, pistol, shotgun, bat, mace, 12ga. tripwire mousetrap, pungi stick man traps. Oh the fond memories…

“If even 1% of them decide that they are going to resist the government with arms, the cops and military are outmanned and likely outgunned.”
Even if those numbers aren’t accurate, to paraphrase the Swiss, “we’ll shoot 3-5 times and go home.”
And RE: “Things will be uglier than you can imagine.” Nope, even uglier than that. But only for a while because Target Shortage (that’s first wave, second wave will be the first wave shooting each other. Then it’ll get quiet, with plenty of parking spaces and some nice apartments in whatever hasn’t been burned down).
