Sounds like a way to end that practice of paying it forward. Can’t have any general niceness to each other in society!
Maybe turn around and hand the folks behind you a $10 or something?

My thought as well – crap like this is why people become less charitable over time.
So, don’t use a third party (e.g. pay it forward), do it directly as you suggest.
Of course, it’s a little easier – and safer – to do that when standing in line; if someone walks up to my car door while I’m stuck in a drive-through lane I am not going to be inclined to open the window…

True, but: Being able to reason that out implies several things young “Sahmir” is unlikely to have. One of those things is low time-preference.
