I have been sitting here watching the crowds rioting and thinking how, if you are in the path of such an attack, how useful it would be to have a belt fed AR (essentially a SAW).

Then I watch the recent activities in Seattle and think how useful a bolt action rifle in .50 BMG would be if directed at the leader of a bunch of revolutionaries that have decided to liberate your neighborhood.

The problem is that the cost for them is the same, and I can only afford one in the short term, and even that means having to forego some other purchases I was planning.

Let’s be honest, I am likely to not buy either.

There's the capital cost, and there's the operating costs.

Have you priced .50BMG rounds?

Honestly, people go overkill in this type of situation. A decent, budget priced Ruger bolt action deer rifle in .308 or 30-06 with a simple 4x scope is all you need. $500 or so cash price and you are an instant sniper with an effective range of roughly 600 yds. Give or take. If you need to drop it and walk away, no tears.

    True, but 50 …

That upper is known to have some problems and is made by a company that has done some shady stuff in the past.

As to that .50 BMG, I'd stay away from that Bushmaster and the new Remington version of it at that price.

Actual bolt action Barretts are available in the same price range and if you wanted to go cheaper have a look at one of the AR bolt action uppers.

If you really want to have the utility of a belt fed without the hassle of linking up ammo or paying extra for belted ammo.

Just get a few D-60s and some 40rd Pmags.

I agree with Don – while a .50 is nice, you get most of the performance at a much lower costs with a 30-06, a .308, or any of several other 'deer rifle' cartridges.
The .50 only really makes a difference at very long ranges or against light armor/ heavy vehicles. Have you checked the weight? They get heavy, long, and awkward fast!
