The local press has been criticizing police for their response on this call. Just out of curiosity, how do they think police should respond to a naked man armed with a gun that is charging at them? Do they really believe that such a person can be reasoned with, if only someone who specializes in mental health can talk to them?
Are they really this stupid?

I’d wonder if he was high on something, and if so, you weren’t going to be able to reason with him.

Speaking as someone who has had to try and talk violent people down, the cop had 2 choices- shoot or flee. If he fled that would have left an armed crazy man loose on the public. The public just doesnt understand your limited options when faced with weapons. I once worked with a lady whose brother was a cop, he tried rescuing a baby being held by a knife wielding crazy man. Both the cop and the baby died. I think the public is more stupid than evil though there are some who will cheer at the death of a cop or a conservative.

Many of the disposable foot soldiers are stupid. The masterminds using them are evil and usually not stupid.

I’m far from being a supporter of police, but charging at you with a gun … if it meets the AOJ criteria then the use of deadly force is warranted. Cops should be held to the same standard as everyone else in this regard. Yet, at the same time: “ According to Weis, deputies responded to a call from a a family regarding the man who was having a mental health crisis.” This never ends well. The cops, aka Pavlov Pig, are a hammer that has been trained to believe that everyone will obey their “commands” and be subservient or else. There is never a situation so bad that it can’t be made worse by introducing cops. Mental issues almost always end in death and disaster when the cops are called. What’s the answer? I don’t know.
