They live in a subject state and as such are not allowed to own normal capacity magazines, to much ammo, modern sporting rifles, home made guns, or a host of other things.
It reads as if the cops, acting on a tip, got permission to look and found. It sounds like one of the AR style rifles had to many holes in the receiver or maybe they had a parts kit.

The grandfather character is a liberal, who obeyed the government in almost every way, including sending his son to government school when there was no penalty for not doing so. The only way he disobeyed had zero political effect. You can’t be an explorer unless you explored something, and likewise you can’t be a conservative or a libertarian unless you conserved or liberated something.

Silence is always an excellent policy. Active denial of posessing some obkector knowledge can also be good tactic certain circumstances, provided one is relaxee and casual about it rather than doing so strongly enough that it actually arouses suspicion instead.

I did the next best thing. I posted some manuals and drawings with instructions on how to build your own firearms with a minimum of skill and common hand tools. Admittedly, one of them requires a welder, but hey, excuse to buy another tool. Harbor freight has one for less than $200.
