I find it ironic that this article makes the claim that Intuit is “screwing over” taxpayers by charging them to use its products without mentioning how it is the government screwing over taxpayers by making the product necessary in the first place.

Yeah… “Free filing” is reducing the cost of government by pennies….
They do have a point that the limitations of the “free” program mean that a portion of filers can’t get the full refund they are do.
I have never been able to use the 1040EZ or the free filing because my return is too complex. And even if I had been eligible, I would not have used it since it would have cost me more money than paying for a return, and anyway you can still file free by mailing tour paperwork in… It’s a pain, but free (except for the stamp).

20-30 years ago, I remember you couldn’t get near the local Post Office on the evening of April 15th because of the line of people/cars stacked up, trying to get their paper tax returns postmarked with April 15th on them. Seemed pretty important at the time. I haven’t checked since then but I doubt the physical post office is backed up evenings April 15th anymore. The time I’m referring to was so far back ago, TurboTax didn’t even copy-protect their tax software (it was on 3.5″ discs back then)

Since I have a business and pay an accountant, I’ve never used it. Having said that, one daughter tried a couple of years ago (to save money), then ended up taking it to their normal filer. Over $1000 difference in the amount they got back!

I’ve used an accountant for years for that reason… He lowers my taxes by WAY more than he charges!
