I can’t believe that I have to do this post again. It seems like every few months, people have to read this, so here we go again.

A couple of people got their panties in a wad because I disparaged Pit Bulls, and they decided to take the argument personal. Since they demanded that I show my work and provide sources, I did so. Then I demanded that they do the same.

Instead, they engaged in a two part attack: They declared that my sources were not reliable, then engaged in personal attacks. At the same time, there was Internet chest thumping about how they would be willing to go to jail for murder if someone shot their pitbull.

One of those who commented even called me a communist for daring to call CFS because a dog who was known to attack people was permitted to be in the yard alone with the child and had torn off a child’s scalp.

Having had enough of the nonsense, I locked comments on the thread, as there was no productive dialog going on at the time, just Internet chest thumping and finger pointing. After that, I received messages about what an asshole I am and how they won’t be back to read my blog. Here is my answer to that:

I don’t care. This isn’t an airport, you don’t have to announce your departure.

This blog costs me money. I blog because I want to. I don’t make money on advertising, nor do I need large numbers of readers in order to validate my feelings. If you don’t want to read what I write, then don’t read. If you want to comment, that’s great. I love a back and forth debate, but let’s not pretend that “I demand that you provide sources,” then refuting those sources with, “I don’t believe them,” while not providing any sources of your own, then impugning my character.

There are rules here for commenting, and I link to them here. They are simple rules, summarized below-

  1. The owner of this blog (me) has the final say on what you can and cannot post. It’s my house, I make the rules. Content here is moderated, and I will not be approving any comments that I find, in my sole judgement, to be unworthy.
  2. Deliberately posting statements that are aimed at insulting the blog owner (me) will get your comment tossed in the trash. Feel free to disagree with me, just don’t call names or impugn my character.
  3. Don’t deliberately insult others. No personal attacks. Feel free to attack ideas.
  4. If you are making a comment about one of my posts, it should be made on the post that you are commenting on, not on another, unrelated post.
  5. No spam.
  6. I don’t approve comments that are out of bounds.
  7. If warnings don’t work and you keep at it, I will ban you from ever posting on this site again. I know that you can pull tricks like IP spoofing, changing your name, etc. So don’t think doing that is going to earn you “I’m so clever” points. It doesn’t make you clever, it makes you an ass.
  8. Too many people using those tricks to circumvent the rules is what got us full time moderation, which is a major pain in my ass, and a major time waster for me.
  9. When in doubt, please refer to rule #1.

Because of this incident, and the amount of work that arguments like this cause, there will be another rule added to the above list:

If you demand that anyone provide evidence for an assertion that they are making, then you must hold yourself to the same standard when making a counterargument. It takes time and effort to research sources, and replying with “Nuh, uh, I refuse to believe that” while not providing sources of your own to refute them is how an 8 year old debates.

Again, I don’t need everyone to agree with me, but I do require that people be civil and hold themselves to a standard of decorum. Locking the comments on that particular post was the least intrusive thing I could have done. I keep moderation to a minimum here.

With that being said, the people who engaged in personal attacks have seen their entire IP banned from commenting.

I just read through the post in question.
You handled yourself with great restraint. I could not have responded so deftly.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

TJ · August 29, 2024 at 8:39 am

Thanks for what you do. I know it takes your time, effort and cash to run this thing – so know that it really is appreciated. That being said, defending pit bulls is like defending illegal immigrants. Only the really delusional do it. But they can’t be moved from their delusion by anything other than hard reality. Life. People. Honestly, I think prosperity is hard to handle. Keep up the good work.

I enjoy your blog and the comments are an added bonus. Thank you for all the effort you pit into it. There are good dog breeds and bad dog breeds and one viscious breed: chihuahuas! Lol. Have a great day.

HEH, HEH, he said “…you pit into it.”… in my best Beavis and Butthead voice.
Otherwise, I completely agree with the above comments. I’m old enough to spot Commies a mile away, you are NOT a Commie, more like a mild Fascist, which I highly approve of, like you need that.

TakeAHardLook · August 29, 2024 at 9:09 am

Thanks for standing firm, DM. After all, this is your turf and we are guests.

Your blog is refreshing, with not a lick of PC nonsense. The blog resonates with me because, in general, the comments are real and reflect the reality of living in the U.S. today. Other than random joking, I never feel that smoke is being pumped up my butt.

Please carry on, and Thank You!

On a related topic, my daughter–a veterinarian who truly loves animals–told me privately that she would humanely euthanize any pit bull at any time, for free, no bag limit, as a service to humanity, to other dog breeds and to her community. She has simply seen too much! Full stop!

I enjoy your work and completely agree on the policies. I’m a retired military-industrial complex manager and have been red-pilled since retiring.
ER and orthopedics are the limited areas of medicine with which I have retained much confidence. They like to fix you rather than make you a customer for life.
You’re spot on with the dogs… I’ve had retrievers.

Djj · August 29, 2024 at 11:18 am

I knew someone who liked dogs more than people. He could barely control the aggressive breeds he owned yet made excuses for them. When l told him any dog that bit one of my kids would get its throat cut he got mad. He is childless and will remain so but the stupidity irked me. He suffered from little man syndrome to no ones surprise.

Steve · August 29, 2024 at 11:38 am

Thank you for doing such a good job of moderating the comments. It makes reading your blog a pleasure and I appreciate the effort you put into it. I also appreciate your posts of your work and explain the medical behind it.

Grumpy51 · August 29, 2024 at 11:39 am

Yours is a daily read for me.

As I raised my kids – you can’t have a rational discussion with irrational people.

Debate (IME) requires me to do one of 2 things—-, either
1. BLUF (bottom line up front) then post my studies, sources, facts, observations, etc
OR
2. Whereas, whereas, whereas, therefore………

A family member is a school teacher…. introduced me to “FOCUS” (Fxxx Off Cuz You Stupid)….. I use it more and more each day….

THANK YOU for your time and energy here — I have learned a LOT (both from you as well as your readers)

Ahhh, the joys of blog hosting. I had a similar reaction to my post on Pits and that I considered one for myself when my 10 pound Rottweiler who is 16 years old decides to slip her mortal coil. I disagreed with some of your points, but it didn’t prompt me to lash out and demand proof or any other such nonsense. It is a circular clown argument. My experiences in ER are much like yours, just a different era. I did look up a “fact” which stated the most dog bites recorded was from Golden Retrievers and second was from Chihuahua like my Guido that has snipped at me a few times over the years and she got punished and had to endure some behavioral modifications. Dogs bite, dogs are not human. They do respond more favorably to affection and respect. Domesticated animals, dogs, cats, birds, lizards and snakes etc… still have a fight or flight instinct and still will revert to a wild state if threatened or a auditory/visual stimulus triggers it. Any dog can and will bite, a aged poodle or a attack trained Pit/Shepard/Malinois.

    Birdog357 · August 29, 2024 at 3:29 pm

I’ve often heard that chihuahuas are the most bite prone breed. But I have never heard of them killing a human being. Shitbulls on the other hand do tear adult human beings limb from limb. I had a loose one growing at me in my own driveway the other day. I had my hand on my gun and the safety already off. I was more than willing to solve the problem permanently.

Next time … Just do it!

        Birdog357 · August 30, 2024 at 7:14 pm

I really didn’t want to have to deal with the cops. I’m pretty sure it belonged to my low class pothead nextdoor neighbors.

Silverfox · August 29, 2024 at 1:54 pm

I was going to post a comment on that cop video from, yesterday? And thought to myself- Why bother. people are so set in their stupid you can’t pry them out with a crow bar. What were my thoughts on the cops? Basically, there is no difference between the Temple guards under the Pharisees in the days of Christ and the modern day police man working the beat. They are not here for you. They are there for the PTB. Same with the military. But try to explain that to most people and you’re crazy.

I only recap my thoughts now as a co example to your experience. As for the hospital situation: If you hadn’t taken action, under the circumstances, and something else occurs in the future- Your job goes Kaput!

As a dog lover I know that ALL Dog can bite.

Even my senior Beagle can bite. The one that has endured grandchildren pulling her ears and body slamming into it playing with her. I have to protect my old Beagle from the Grands.

And that hurts her feelings because she LOVES to play with them. Just can’t win LOL.

As EMS and working OR for several decades, Pitbulls, Chow Chows, and Rottweiler attacks show up most often for the cases I see in the ER-OR.

Powerful dogs bred to attack are more dangerous than the one of the most popular dog breeds in America, the Golden.

It’s like arguing about 13% of our population causes some 90% of our violent crime.

Tennessee Budd · August 29, 2024 at 6:20 pm

I don’t get people who do that.
I read the earlier post, and I’ve long known your opinion on APBTs. It didn’t and doesn’t bother me. You have your opinion and I have mine, and they’re opposite. We’re free men and adults. Why should I get all upset if we differ? Why should anyone?

IcyReaper · August 29, 2024 at 8:34 pm

Sorry you had to go thru that BS and state the rules again. I was following that threads comments because it was a serious subject and thought about jumping in but since I’ve had that discussion with Pit owners before, I sadly knew it wouldn’t make any difference. Those folks will not change their minds, ever. I lost a old friend back east after his pit tore up another friends dog for no reason at a reunion. Those dogs had been around each other for several years. His dogs switch just flipped. All you can do is make the rules clear. Your dog hurts one of mine, it dies. Your dog comes on my property and makes aggressive moves, it dies. You gotta a problem with that, too bad for you.

Doc · August 30, 2024 at 1:53 am

‘Again, I don’t need everyone to agree with me, but I do require that people be civil and hold themselves to a standard of decorum.’

Rules to live by.

And I learned something today – FOCUS 🙂

Rob · August 30, 2024 at 7:06 am

I enjoy and appreciate this blog. I share most all of your opinions. Thanks!
Pit bulls are the African American of dogs. They are the most likely breed to turn on you. I noticed the same 18% – 58% ratio. Facts butthurt those living in denial.

It's just Boris · August 30, 2024 at 8:22 am

Your blog, your rules. Simple as that.

Well, and basic manners. If I wouldn’t scream in your face in person, I wouldn’t do it online either. But that’s how I was raised … And that becomes a separate discussion.

Re the

Mike Hendrix · August 30, 2024 at 10:58 am

Sounds like you might need to avail yourself of a copy of my Butthurt Form, in the left sidebar of my blog, which you should feel perfectly free to do. As for the doggehs, for whatever it may be worth I LOVE pit bulls, have had ’em my whole life with nary a problem from any of them. The only problem I ever did have with a dog was with my grandmother’s German Shepherd, which jumped me out in the yard when I was a little kid. Well, okay, then there was a friend of mine’s Chihuahua (trembly little rat-dog) that bit me on the wrist some years back, and another friend’s Boston terrier (looks like a dog, only smaller) which I sent flying into the wall across her living room when the nasty little turd sank his teeth into my ankle. Both of the latter had spent much time sitting calmly on my lap being petted, and I knew my grandma’s Shepherd quite well also before it opted to drag me around the yard for no apparent reason. Gotta watch out for them dogs, I don’t care what breed they are…well, except cocker spaniels, maybe.

Dogs are pack members and not Fur Babies. If you let them be Pack Leaders, you are responsible for their bad behavior, injury to others and termination of the dog.
You can love them all you want as long as they understand they are betas and under submission to you and your family.
