I posted that I had been told a US sub sank a ship or possibly a submarine with a torpedo, but couldn’t confirm. It turns out to have been factual.

The USA Military is getting a chance to demonstrate all of their tools to the world. People will be running for dark corners of Earth to hide after this.

I bet that sub captain was just itching to sink that ship when he found out it was Iranian.

There are two types of ships, submarines and targets!

Agreed, a lousy messenger, but the message us sound.

I was on one of the boats that was used as a target for the Mk 48 development test shots. Nasty things once they know where the target boat is. Surface ships are dead meat from the get go.

Which boat? I was on a couple of SSN’s out of San Diego.

The Silversides SSN-679 sank the Ex Tiru SS-416 in 1979 with a MK48 ADCAP torpedo.

Yeah, but that was an exercise and the ship sunk was a target drone.
Rick T · March 6, 2026 at 9:11 pm
There have been a number of exercise shots (SinkExes) over the years and the Mk48 makes an impressive explosion. A target hulk might survive two or three cruise missile strikes but the Mk48 ends the exercise.
I’m an old Fast Attack sailor and we fired exercise torpedoes at targets as part of weapons quals. This is the first actual use of a Mk48 war shot against an enemy vessel, and from what I saw it did exactly what it was supposed to: home in on the largest noise and blow up under the target to break its back.
