A couple of people made comments to my post on earning my MBA. I did it for a number of reasons-
At nearly 60 years old, I go home at night with a sore back, feet, and legs. I was upset about being forced to take unpaid training, and other things. I am a huge proponent of this:
If you are unhappy with your job, you have two choices: you can improve your worth and get a better job, or you can bitch about it and become miserable.
I decided to do something about it, I thought long and hard about what I wanted, and how I needed to get there. I went back to school to get a master’s degree- a business one. Getting an MSN would not change things, but an MBA would qualify me for management or at least an administrative position.
That’s great advice for anyone- if you don’t like your job, what are you doing to better yourself? How are you going to move forward? You can complain, or you can DO something about it. Which plan is more likely to get you what you want?

You sir will be shunned and eventually eliminated. Preaching truth and wisdom in this day and age. Shameful! Simply shameful! What if your damnable idea(s) became mainstream (sadly not much chance since most are both lazy and ignorant)? Think of the political chaos! Think of the poor lazy and uninspired! How dare you sir! How dare you!
All said (I hope) with snark and sarcasm.

Bravo Zulu !! Well done. I too was nearing 60 when I completed my Masters in Electrical Engineering. Really good move on my part. Lots and lots (and lots) of late nights and early mornings. Wish I had done it in my 30’s, but I was too busy running around the world and having kiddos.

Sore back and legs, etc… Why I took a dual masters, nursing and behavioral science when I was in my later 30s. I knew that I would not be capable of taking the pace as a floor nurse in my mid 60s or even into my 70s. I knew I could counsel someone sitting comfortably and not go home broke and sore and I saw I could leverage those degrees into an administrative job in healthcare in my later years. Nursing, I am sure puts as much stress on a human body accumulatively as a rough neck worker on an oil rig or a construction worker. Always have an edge and a back-up plan.

Yes, why I went through and got my MS… Was the “merit badge” needed to get the job I currently have. Not 100% required to have a Master’s for a CIO job, but… And now that I have 5 years experience, the recruiters (I guess they no longer like being called “headhunters”) are calling again… But yeah, painted myself into a corner at my old job and needed to get out. So, figured out what the next steps were and moved in that direction. Good luck sir!

I hear from people all the time how Terrible their work/life/home situation is and the one factor that I see that is common to the chronic (as in Never ending) complainers is that if you suggest some action they can do to improve their position, they immediately give you a long list of reasons they can’t. And usually append that with the observation that you were dumb to even suggest it. Some people appear to enjoy their suffering and will snap like a starving animal if anyone suggests they shouldn’t gorge on toxic porridge.
I am retired, during my service my job had a Lot of headaches, some which could Not be changed unless we got an act of Congress. I literally found out that not only could I not push the jello uphill, the best that I could hope for was to keep it from sliding back down into the sewer where I had found it the day I started my job.
BUT, I Loved my job despite these headaches and it was a military capped position, I reached the cap and would have to drop out of SF and change units to advance in rank/money.
I made my choice and mostly enjoyed 17 years in that job.
I now own the highest valued property on our street, and since the local city has decided to become my HOA and the fact that I am retired and living on disability and AF retired pay will soon pop smoke, take my profits from two decades of hard work and move to less a stress filled environment with NO city HOA looking over my shoulder.
Good job getting the MBA, always look towards diversifying your skills to better address your capabilities to overcome troubles.

I’ve worked for a lot of different companies. What ultimately led me to become self-employed wasn’t the company but the co-workers I had. They are insufferable. I prefer the sore back than the litany of complaints by a bunch of no-load, gold-bricking clock riders.
