So it turns out that, when a mass shooting takes place or is attempted in a location that allows concealed carry, a good guy with a gun stops the shooter 51% of the time.

In fact, concealed carriers thwart active shooters more than a third of the time. If there were fewer gun free zones, that number would likely be much, much higher.

Almost a monotonically increasing series as the number of guns goes up year over year the percentage stopped goes up as well. Why, it’s almost as if they correlate perfectly.

The FBI fudges data to hide that? Wait a minute while I draw to get shocked by that revelation. Nope. Sorry. No can do.

Yeah, the number of shootings in areas that allow carry is climbing.
81 shootings in 2021, with 47 being stopped by CCW.
43 in 2020, with 19 being stopped by CCW.
18 in 2019, with 10 being stopped by CCW.
13 in 2018, with 7 being stopped by CCW.
18 in 2017, with 8 being stopped by CCW.
14 in 2016, with 4 being stopped by CCW.
8 in 2015, with 6 being stopped by CCW.
In an odd statistical coincidence, it looks like the 2020 election results.

Considering it’s very well known that the copycat effect tends to lead to repeat events, it would be interesting if a statistical parallel can be found determining if these armed citizen interventions also cause a cooling effect deterring future events.

Big country’s blog is gone.

Good post. I think it was John Lott who wrote a book on the subject. “More Guns, Less Crime.”

    Divemedic · October 10, 2022 at 5:38 pm

He did. In fact, the NRA magazines used to have an entire section called “The Armed Citizen” that was dedicated to it.

      They still do.

Yeah, John Lott wrote “More Guns, Less Crime.” I have an autographed hardback of it around here someplace. Saw him speaking at a local gun event about the time it was published and of course afterwards he had a book signing – so I took him up on it. 🙂
