I’ve carried or owned both, and in a silly kind of way, I get his point.

An M16 can pretend to be an AR15 but an AR15 cannot pretend to be an M16.
But for the life of me I can’t see the usefulness of the comparison.

“There is nothing about a Colt 1911 that makes it not a Colt Peacemaker.”
Another instance of silliness.

My response was the following quote:

The weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over automatic machine guns vs semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun—can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.

He responded by asking me why I was copy and pasting AI slop. The quote was written decades ago.

An AR-15 can pretend if you install an FRT. Not quite the same but it simulates one.

Stoner: “What do you think of my new rifle?”
Kalashnikov: “Very nice – but will it still operate after being run over by a tank?”
