Communists always seem to deputize criminals and use them to control the citizens. That explains why Democrats are proposing that those facing 4 years or less of jail time be permitted to join the military instead.

Democrats are busy kicking Constitution loving service members out, so they can be replaced by criminals. Why? Well which one is more likely to follow orders to fire on fellow citizens?

They are also more apt to ignore the orders of superiors. The blade cuts both ways.

Hasn’t this been an option all along, if the military would take them?
I’ve heard stories going back decades where judges give young men the choice between signing up and jail time.

@Jonathan

Not so much. USMC standards during the height of the “plus up” in the 2000’s required a waiver for anything that wasn’t a petty misdemeanor. Even too many parking tickets and it needed a waiver. Depending on the level, waivers weren’t easy to come by. 2x felonies and an individual was permanently disqualified from the Corps. Certain charges and it was an automatic disqualification, even if not a felony.

Not sure how “sign up” or go to prison works in practice; given the mental and physical qualifications applied DoD-wide, that would lead to many questions or difficult scenarios. I wonder what would happen if someone was disqualified for a physical aspect outside the span of their knowledge and control. Does that mean they walk from the charge, or go to prison? If they walk, why not just intentionally fail the ASVAB and not have to worry about the physical?

    @ Sarin –
    You have to go back to before the turn of the century. All branches needed recruits badly enough, they’d look the other way when a judge said “military or jail”. After Viet Nam, the military was frowned upon by all the civilian world and would take whatever they could get. It wasn’t until 9/11 that people understood the need for a military. Even then, civilians were just happy that “someone else” would answer the call to service. Despite the technology, our military is not ready for conventional warfare. These kids, and I include the children in the five sided fun-house, can’t function without “gadgets”.

      @ Chuck,
      Agreed. Thanks for the education sir. Family members explained that era of business. Nice to know they weren’t blowing smoke… Jonathan insinuated it was still that way. I’d imagine a changing of the standards would be required if it were to be re-enacted.

When I joined the army in 1975, I met quite a few who were offered “join the army or go to jail “. Some good, some bad. Quite a few National Guard who missed too many meetings also.
