Shelby County, TN. A man hears noise outside of his house. He sees thieves in his car, trying to steal it and steps outside to confront them. The thieves begin shooting, so the homeowner fires back. At least 30 shots are fired during the firefight, but no one appears to have been hit.
The homeowner admitted to police that he had closed his eyes out of fear during at least part of the gun battle, so they arrested him for reckless endangerment. Note that they have made no effort to try and catch the actual criminals. That would be dangerous and cops want to collect their pensions.
Edited to add: This is Memphis. They have a slimeball of a leftist Democrat prosecutor who literally wrote a book on how Democrats could rig US elections, where he advocated for the Interstate compact, eliminating the electoral college, and eliminating the Senate filibuster to silence Republicans.
He also has been a huge motivator in the defund the police and LGTBQ movements. He’s written articles for SLATE, NEWSWEEK, THE NEW REPUBLIC, SALON, THE HILL, and the HUFFINGTON POST.
I trust him not one iota.

The Shelby county sheriff is also a Democrat elected last year. The only platform statements I could find for him were “I want to be the first black Sheriff of Shelby county.”

He did manage to shoot up the house across the street though – it was occupied. When you fire a gun, you are responsible for the bullets.

There’s quite a bit wrong with the homeowners actions. If you admit you’re just pulling the trigger with your eyes closed, that is pretty stupid reckless. And he says he didn’t want to kill anyone? Then don’t go outside armed and send 30 rounds downrange with your damned eyes closed.
Sure I think those kids are liable if someone got hurt, but the homeowner bring reckless is for sure an issue. I like Toast’s recommendation below.

Which is why he should never have talked to the police. Note that he didn’t say that he was blindly sending bullets downrange with his eyes shut. It is easy for cops to get the statement to say something and blow it into being more damning than it was.
(See “My Cousin Vinny” when he said “I shot the clerk? I shot the clerk?” then the cop read it in court without inflection)
Sorry, I don’t trust cops or the press to accurately represent what happened. That’s why you keep your mouth shut until your lawyer gets there.

So your research on the LE and prosecution for that area means that guy is double fucked. As you mention he ran his mouth to the cops with comments that absolutely did not benefit him, and even if he did everything right, the super liberal DA is going to throw the kitchen sink at him.

A shame I’m not in charge. I’d offer him a deal: plead guilty to a misdemeanor, and I’d sentence him to six months of range time so he can improve his aim. I’d also have him write Col. Jeff Cooper’s firearm rules 100 times for good measure.
