Now that the dust is settling and actual facts are coming out, I can post what the cops have released:
At 12:58 p.m. PT yesterday, two vehicles were traveling near Silver Rail Elementary, he said. At that time the suspect approached a fence area of the school from an undeveloped area, crossed the street, threw his weapon over the fence, then climbed the fence onto the school property, Krantz said.
A driver of a red Toyota pickup saw the suspect and“verbally confronted him,” the chief said. The suspect then fired at the pickup, hitting it at least three times.
The driver eventually kept driving and made the initial 911 call.
The driver of a second vehicle — a 36-year-old man whose children attend the school — witnessed the shooting involving the pickup. That man then drove into the school’s parking lot as the suspect was walking along the south side of the school and broke in.
The suspect was identified by police as Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old Bend resident. He was armed with a long gun and gained entry into the school by shooting through locked doors. He was a special needs student in that school in the past.
The 36-year-old man parked his car, took out a 40-caliber pistol that he had “legally secured in his vehicle,” and went toward the school, Krantz said.
He heard the shooting and saw a teacher involved in a physical altercation with the suspect. He then entered the classroom and fired his weapon, “striking the suspect multiple times.”

God bless that man. Very sorry he was not a few minutes sooner. I’m sure Oregon will find some way to take his gun and charge him with murder.

It’s unlikely, the “reform” DA John Hummel might have tried but he’s now in Colorado and the current Deschutes County DA wants to be reelected. The same applies to the Bend city government. While some will smear him as a vigilante the majority are calling him a hero

Yes may God Bless the good guy with the .40. And let’s all say a prayer for him too because taking a life would surely have lasting psychological consequences, regardless of circumstances.

I saw where he is agonizing over not getting to the shooter sooner.

Even CNN brings up the “good guy with a gun” in a positive light — https://x.com/nicksortor/status/2110872564843041031

Forgive me. I may go to Hell for this, but I hope the kid was yet another trans shooter. Not because I think it’s funny, but because maybe it will help more people to wake up to the harm ‘Gender Rights’ is doing. In any case, props to the CC carrier, and the teacher who tackled the kid and regrets to the parents and the other kids who saw this happening. I hope they go easy on the carrier, and the teacher gets ‘Teacher of the Year.’

Not that early rumors may be true or not, but living close enough to Bend that it’s semi-local news (because of lack of population between us rather than distance – Bend’s on the empty side of the Cascades), an early that-day report did suggest the shooter was trans. That aspect was quickly buried – whether because it was true or because it was false is hard to tell at this point. As they say: “All the news you need to know” and “they” may decide we don’t need to know.
