Wizard Special Forces? Squad composition might be something like this:

Alchemical (Energy) “Tank” – Front line fighter, absorbs all forces (kinetic, thermal/cryo, electric, various forms of magic) directed at them and CONVERTS them into other forms of energy appropriate for the target, stores them, then channels them back at the enemy. “Yes, please hit me with everything you’ve got. I’ll give it all back to you, all at once.”

Telekinetic Storm God – Uses masterful control of Telekinesis to turn every object around him into a projectile or shield, or concentrates power over a long distance to throw a single rock or small lead ball bearing at impossible, railgun-like velocities. One walking on a gravel pathway (or through a kitchen full of sharp forks and knives) would be absolutely insane. “Thank you for the ammo.”

Portal Master – Doesn’t just use portals for travel for the team or to get past barriers. Can use a portal as a shield to redirect projectiles and attacks back at the enemy, possibly from behind or along the flanks for enfilade. Generates portals *under* foes, with the exits set overhead at the limit of the distance such a portal can reach. This could be the stratosphere and watch them splat a couple minutes later… Or it could be near-Earth orbit. “Enjoy breathing vacuum, assholes…”

Artificer/Mechanist – Uses magic to enhance items, weapons, armor, or technology. Can use his talents to study magic items and alter them (possibly catastrophically if desired). Maintains team gear, may have a mechanical golem companion that does tasks for the team, “Infernal Combustion Engine” steam engines powered by captive Fire Elementals that eat whatever combustibles you feed them for fuel. “That magic lightning sword / wand of doom is cute. Do you know what happens when I remove the safeties?”

Empathic Healer/Master of Pain – Uses his natural mana to heal damage on touch and absorb pain. May be able to consume people’s intense emotions and use them as fuel. Pain absorbed can be stored and dished back out in concentrated form as a touch attack. May be able to enhance his own body/muscle power etc. for superhuman feats of strength or endurance. Knows the body so well that attacking key nerve clusters or shutting down organs destroys the enemy. May torture enemies and absorb their pain as an interrogation technique and a source of pain “ammo”. “Your tears are delicious… Now, let me show you what true agony is.”

They go where others won’t or can’t. They take on threats that would make most heroes shit their pants or break down in utter despair and horror. Goody-two-shoes heroes find them horrifying in their own right, but nobody can stop them. The only thing truly guiding them are their principles. They understand that the bad guys made a choice that brought the wrath down on them. They don’t try to take responsibility for other people’s emotional fragility or walk on eggshells. If they’re involved, somebody really fucked up, and playing by the rules doesn’t cut it anymore.
