The Sheriff of Osceola county was just arrested for running an illegal gambling operation that netted him more than $20 million over the past 5 years. He even used his official position to make sure law enforcement never investigated what was going on.
As I have said before, every elected official is on the take, with very few exceptions, and our police are nothing more than a criminal gang with qualified immunity.

That this is surprising to so many is what’s really surprising. They’re in it for the grift; at most levels it’s become institutionalized; all that any election changes is the name on the checks.
What the fix is for it I haven’t a clue, except, maybe, to induce absolutely massive transparency simultaneously with very drastically reducing the size, power and expense of government to severely limit the pillaging and, hopefully, the ability to manipulate authority for personal gain. Churn might be a benefit – severely reduce available time in office with radically short term limits. although that might just result in a larger group of smaller grifters.
You’d think “transparency” might be covered by Florida’s Sunshine Laws, but it isn’t. As long as there is money to be grifted, and power to do it with, public office will be filled with corrupt grifters.

It’s sad, really. I live in a small country community, many of the local law enforcement’s kids went to school with mine, played ball with mine… they actually are really good guys. But stuff like this, puts a stink on the whole industry, not just career, as a result I have no respect for these people.
That’s the rub, they all want to be respected, looked up to, put on a pedestal, but they don’t want to hold themselves to a higher standard. We’re supposed to treat them like that, but they don’t have to act like that. Every time the subject comes up, it’s ‘thin blue line’, ‘muh pension’, or finally ‘you civilians just wouldn’t understand…’
Nope, you’re right, I don’t understand. My morals are not subjected to whether or not you work in the same field as I do!
If you’re a crooked bum, you’re a crooked bum, don’t care if you wear a badge or not. Those who DO wear a badge, and cover for the crooked bums, are the reason I have ZERO respect for law enforcement, even if it is the “good guys” in my AO. You want to be treated to a higher standard? Act like you deserve it.

The key to reducing corruption in government is reducing the power of any particular person in government to influence anything.
The problem with law enforcement is that they, by definition, have certain power. I don’t have a solution for that.
Perhaps a take on the checks and balances – no single jurisdiction has a single law enforcement agency. And no agency is ‘above’ another. That may mean a lot of infighting, more wasteful spending, and less efficient government – but it may prevent corruption, graft, and criminality. Maybe.

The only difference between this sheriff and ALL the other criminals pinned to a badge is he got caught with his hand in he cookie jar.
